Creating value for the environment

As a major retail chain with extensive nationwide activity, Shufersal considers itself responsible for its impact on the environment.  In recent years, Shufersal has built a system for reducing its environmental impact along four channels:

Energy efficiency

The Company has taken technical and operational measures to increase the efficiency of all its major consumption sources, so as to decrease air pollution and conserve energy.

The process began by identifying the four main sources of power consumption: air conditioning, baking ovens, refrigerators, and freezers. Next, professionals were hired to maximize these machines' efficiency and their operators were trained how to optimize efficiency.

Shufersal has also slashed its power consumption on secondary sources: such as lighting and cash registers.

Another heavy energy consumer is the chain’s fleet of trucks, used to transport goods nationwide.. To reduce air pollution, Shufersal ensures its trucks are well-maintained and tests their emissions on a regular basis.

For Shufersal, energy conservation is key to reducing its expenses and environmental impact, effectively creating both business- and social added value. The Company therefore promotes energy conservation ventures.

Reduce packaging

In 2011, Shufersal participated in the founding of Tamir - Packaging Recycling Corporation, which operates under the Packaging Management Law. Established to maximize package recycling and minimize waste, Tamir is a non-profit organization recognized by the Ministry of Environmental Protection. Shufersal is a shareholder in Tamir and has a director on its board.

Shufersal is committed to reducing the use of packaging, including carton and plastic sheeting, both for its private label and in deliveries. The Company takes care to keep abreast of the latest technological improvements regarding environmentally-friendly materials. At its branches, Shufersal offers customers incentives to buy products in large containers, thus reducing the packaging volume.  

Responsible waste treatment 

Shufersal takes care to remove the waste it produces using special containers, which the local authorities then evacuate to authorized landfills.  Most of Shufersal’s waste consists of carton, paper, wood pallets, plastic, and organic waste from meat and produce.  Shufersal uses every means at its disposal to track and reduce the quantities of waste discarded each day - especially where non-biodegradable products are concerned.  

Green building 

Shufersal strives to adopt green building principles when planning new buildings. The Company, encourages the use of environmentally-friendly building materials, efficient thermal insulation, exploitation of natural light, as well as reduction of building waste and its removal to authorized landfills.

Shufersal also integrates green building principles into existing structures, by improving their functioning and efficiency, maximizing adjustments to contemporary needs and the use of natural energy. The Company’s primary logistics center at Shoham implements advanced energy conservation practices and efficiency norms and means.

Reducing the use of plastic bags 

Plastic bags harm the environment in three main ways: 

  • They are made of petroleum, a non-renewable resource;  
  • They only degrade after hundreds, even thousands, of years;
  • Their production involves the emission of harmful greenhouse gases.


To reduce the use of plastic bags, Shufersal sells multiuse bags at subsidized prices and discounts.  In addition, as of 1 January 2017, under the Plastic Bag Law, plastic bags in Israel may no longer be distributed free of charge and carry a NIS 0.10 charge.   As an alternative to plastic bags, the Company offers its customers high-quality multiuse bags, to reduce environmental impact.
